Next Llangennech

Llangennech Rugby Football Club was established in 1885, when enthusiasm for the game had spread across local villages after Llanelli won the South Wales trophy. Since then, Llangennech has had a side that has played in every rugby season since 1885, with only the two World wars breaking the run.

Founder members of the West Wales League in 1929 along with Ystalyfera, the “Bois y Llan” maintained a steady and consistent position within the table all the way thru the Second World War, up to its renaming as the “West Wales Championship” in 1950, their best being a 5th position finish in 1931-32. During this period, meetings against Ystalyfera saw the ‘Fera gain six wins, two draws and a single defeat away in 1950. In the Championship period between 1950 and 1974 however, fortunes changed, Llangennech achieving five wins, three draws and a single 17-0 defeat at Ynysydarren in 1971-72. The West Wales Sections Period brought an improvement in fortune for both sides. Starting in Section D, promoted Ystalyfera won a ‘double’ over Llangennech who in turn were promoted the season after. In 1976-77 the ‘Fera were Champions of Section C achieving another Llangennech ‘double’. A Section C 2nd place promotion in 1978-79 for Llangennech saw both sides win at home. Relegation and promotion ended with Llangennech Champions of Section B in 1984-85. The National League years have been the “Golden Period” for Llangennech. Founder members of Division Eight West A, they have finished Champions no less than seven times, current season 2023-24 their first in the Championship.

Meetings in the West Wales Cup have been numerous, our first was in 1967-68 in the First Round, when a 3-3 draw at Ystalyfera was followed by a return game win for Llangennech. In 1982-83 at Ynysydarren in the Second Round, Llangennech won again 13-9. A third win for Llangennech followed in the 1986-87 First Preliminary Round, this time narrowly 15-18. Away In 1998-99 again in the Preliminary Round, ‘Fera lost 22-34. Eventually Ystalyfera gained a victory in the 2018-19 West Wales Cup Semi-Final at Morriston 24-7. Llangennech lost their first West Wales Cup final in 2002-03 against Llandovery 16-60. The next season they lost for the second time to Carmarthen Quins 10-29. Third time lucky in season 2004-05 saw victory over Waunarlwydd 28-14. In season 2021-22 Llangennech lost their third West Wales Cup final to Newcastle Emlyn 22-34.
