Felinfoel 20 – 30 Ystalyfera

Ystalyfera travelled to the King George V field in Felinfoel to play the second Leg of the Championship promotion play off on Sunday the 12th May, this apparently being the first ever competitive match to play there on a Sunday. Any thoughts of hope and Prayers had to be with the home side, they losing the first Leg 28 – 34, the ‘Fera having the 6 point lead and ahead in Try count 4 – 1. Conditions were very sunny and warm, with no breeze of any significance..

Ystalyfera kicked off with the sun high behind them. A set of kicks between the sides, ended with an Ystalyfera knock on and the first scrum to Felinfoel. The ‘Fera were awarded the first penalty, and from the first line out won another penalty for an illegal side entry. This was converted by full back Steffan Castle: score 0 - 3. Felinfoel chased the restart and moving the ball quickly to their left, they caught the ‘Fera defence line somewhat out of shape, wing Eray Wilson running in the first Try of the game in the 8th minute. Felinfoel prolific kicker Aled Roberts playing outside half narrowly missed the conversion attempt: score 5 – 3. A further set of kicks by both sides at the restart saw Steffan Castle drop the ball, Felinfoel getting a scrum on half way. Another scrum penalty for Ystalyfera moved control of the ball, opting for a line out in the home 22. Ystalyfera launched an attack in their right hand corner, wing Luc Caines narrowly missing the chance of a Try. Continuing the advance, ‘Fera outside half Gareth James made a near perfect line kick out to left wing Bowdy Davies, he just losing a grasp on the ball. The ‘Fera pressure continued, with a further scrum on the home 22. Playing the ball out, the attack was stopped illegally, ‘Fera opting for a line out on the left hand side. Felinfoel were defending hard and a long clearance was fielded by Steffan Castle, who returned the ball back into the ‘Foel half. Winning possession Felinfoel took the opportunity to run out of defence, but the ‘Fera back line stood true. The game began to settle in midfield, both sides attempting short kicks to open gaps. Ystalyfera crept into the home 22, and a pair of line outs with good forward play saw a chance for ‘Fera flanker Owain Morgan, this being disallowed by the referee. Further pressure with the scrum eventually broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, ‘Fera No8 and Captain Steffan Jones forcing himself over for the first Ystalyfera Try. This was converted by Steffan Castle: score 5 – 10.Relentless, Ystalyfera made a speedy attempt after the restart but the chance was lost. A slight lapse of concentration allowed Felinfoel to break out, and cheered on loudly by the home support wing Elliot Dawe broke attempts to tackle him and sped over for the second Felinfoel Try in the 40+2 minute. This was converted by Aled Roberts leaving a slender half time lead of 12 – 10 (40 – 44 on aggregate).

The ‘Foel started the second period, and following a feisty contest in the middle, won a penalty that Aled Roberts gratefully stroked over. This lifted the score to 15 – 10, and the home side seemingly raised their game. Winning a scrum close to the centre spot, a high kick by Aled Roberts proved difficult for ‘Fera full back Steffan Castle, and Felinfoel wing Eray Wilson managed to collect the bounce and dart forward for his second and Felinfoel’s third Try in the 45th minute. The match score was now 20 – 10 and an aggregate lead of 4 points for the ‘Foel. A long deep kick off saw the ball go dead and Ystalyfera received a drop out. Attacking further and managing to steal a home scrum, a penalty gave Ystalyfera a 5m line out. A well practised catch and drive saw the ‘Fera roll inwards toward the home try-line where the powerful flanker Ben Williams powered thru for a Try. This was converted by Steffan Castle in the 52nd minute: score 20 – 17. With the aggregate lead back with Ystalyfera, Felinfoel began to open the game out. Ystalyfera were giving away nothing and in the 56th minute Steffan Castle stretched the lead with a well taken penalty: score 20 – 20. The Ystalyfera scrum was now becoming most effective and Felinfoel struggled to gain possession. Gareth James line kicks were keeping the home side pinned in their half, and in the 60th minute, from the back of a scrum wing Bowdy Davies ghosted his way thru the weak tackling Felinfoel defence to get the third Ystalyfera Try. This was again converted by Steffan Castle: score 20 – 27. The Ystalyfera forwards were now in full control, a drop goal effort by Steffan Castle being disallowed. Felinfoel were struggling to respond and Gareth James potted a drop goal of his own in the 78th minute: score 20 – 30. Keeping control of the game a late effort by Felinfoel failed to materialise and the match ended 20 – 30 (48 – 64 on aggregate).

An excellent game of rugby by two good sides, was played in total sunshine and appreciated by the large contingent of both home and away supporters. Felinfoel made a valiant effort and Ystalyfera proved their strength to win promotion into the National Championship.

The Penalty count was 12 for Ystalyfera and 7 for Felinfoel.
