Ystalyfera 30 - 12 Tondu

Aberkenfig side Tondu entertained at Ynysydarren on the 3rd October. In dry and occasional sunny conditions the visitors kicked off towards the Swansea end. An immediate penalty gave Tondu a 5m line-out and a simple catch and drive allowed flanker Lloyd Tucker to score the first Try in the 2nd minute. This was not converted. From the re-start the ‘Fera ‘woke up’ somewhat gaining quick possession. With deft movement of the ball, a pass out to winger Hywel Evans saw him run in his first Try for the club in three years. This was converted by full back Emyr Myers in the 6th minute - score 7 – 5. Ystalyfera were dictating the speed of the contest which allowed a fast open game. In the 10th minute a penalty given for offside in the Tondu half allowed Emyr Myers to increase the home tally – score 10 – 5. The home team now in full control gained another offside penalty 3 minutes later, Emyr obliging to lift the score to 13 – 5. Tondu began to raise their efforts but mistakes were apparent, the ‘Fera defending well. Penalties awarded to the visitors were chosen as line-outs but since the opening minutes the ‘Fera forwards were on full alert, clearance being most effective. In the 28th minute Ystalyfera broke away and a full on charge led by centre Stephen Myers, saw the ball popped out to Hywel Evans who ran in his second Try. Not converted score was now 18 – 5. The game now became a ‘loose’ affair and the home side were hungry to increase the score, pressure being kept on Tondu. ‘Fera number 8 Stephan Jones was beginning to dictate play, clearing and setting the ball up at every opportunity. This proved profitable in the 32nd minute when scrum half Tom Barry gratefully received the ball to score the 3rd Try. At the end of the first period a penalty awarded to the visitors within the home 5m area, was again opted as a line-out – Ystalyfera broke free and quick passing saw Hywel Evans touch down again, unfortunately the referee disallowing with a forward pass. Half time score finished at  23 – 5.

Ystalyfera kicked off the second half and Tondu made a much improved effort. Home substitutes came on early and ‘Fera were back on the attack. Tondu countered with more attempts at close line-outs and the home forwards were being tested. In the 66th minute Ystalyfera were set up in the away corner of the field and forceful play was rewarded when Stephan Jones deservedly scored the ‘bonus’ point Try, this being converted by Emyr Myers, score 30 – 5. The game now progressed as a very open affair with Ystalyfera potentially looking to add further score. At the end of the match Tondu camped themselves in the home corner and after a number of penalties/line-outs were given a penalty Try by the referee in the 80+6th minute. This was converted by number ten Mathew Murphy leaving the final score 30 – 12.
