Ystalyfera 34 - 24 Builth Wells

In dry, cold conditions with no wind, Ystalyfera entertained Builth Wells at Ynysydarren in the 4th home game of the League season. An early pair of penalties for offside put immediate pressure on the home side, and the chance to run the ball was lost to Builth Wells thanks to poor execution. A set of testing deep kicks were then applied by outside half Gareth James, being fielded well by the away full back. In the 7th minute an attempted clearance kick from a scrum was charged down by Builth and short passes between the scrum half and No8 saw Ben Duggan score the first Try. This was converted by No14 Luke Morgan – score: 0 – 7. Ystalyfera counter attack immediately after the restart with the forwards gaining momentum into the Garage corner. A penalty was the reward which Gareth James converted – score: 3 – 7. Repeatedly play was back in the same corner from the kick off and another penalty was missed by Gareth. Ystalyfera were now attempting to raise the pace of the game and in the 16th minute quick passing out the line allowed winger Luc Caines to run in his 6th Try of the season in the school corner. Gareth James kicked an excellent touchline conversion lifting the score to 10 – 7. Builth Wells were determined to restore their advantage and a fast attack from the restart tore through the home defence where No11 Kyle Baggett scored their second Try. This was not converted – score: 10 – 12. Play resumed as a tussle in midfield, the ‘Fera forwards gaining the upper hand, pushing the game back to the garage corner. Ystalyfera passing became risky with the Builth defence stealing the ball and clearing downfield. Full back Steffan Castle worked well but eventually the back three ran out of space. In the 26th minute Builth No9 Ricky Dickson was able to find a gap and run in the third visitor Try. This was converted by Luke Morgan – score: 10 – 19. The Ystalyfera open game plan was certainly not working, giving too much space for Builth Wells to utilise. Urged on by home support Ystalyfera worked harder and playing a closer game moved the ball into the Builth half. Smart play between the backs allowed Steffan Castle run in the second home Try in the 33rd minute, again converted by Gareth James. Whilst Builth made another determined attack from the restart events concluded at Half time 17 – 19 to the visitors.

The beginning of the second period saw the ‘Fera forwards move events into the Builth half. An early penalty was missed by Gareth James but the home pressure remained. Ystalyfera forwards were now full on and a textbook catch and drive in the 50th minute saw Captain and No8 Steffan Jones score a Try which again was converted – score: 24 – 19. Builth Wells attempted to recoup their position but their effort was lacking any power. Ystalyfera attacked again and Gareth James kicked his second penalty in the 55th minute. The effort from both sides was now beginning to take its toll. Builth were employing a well rehearsed line out move which nearly paid dividends but the ‘Fera pack were too experienced to get caught. The referee awarded a yellow card to the Builth kicker Luke Morgan for repeated offside tackles, and Ystalyfera took advantage mounting a full attack across the field where Steffan Jones ran in his second Try in the 64th minute. Gareth James again converts well lifting the score to 34 – 19. The game now settled in midfield where no quarter was being given by both sides. Creeping into the school corner Builth force over a driving Try in the 82nd minute. This was not converted – final score:  34 – 24.

A must win game for Ystalyfera to lift them off the bottom, sending a message to their close contenders that enough fixtures remain to allow the ‘Fera to work up the Division One table..

Penalty count was 13 for Ystalyfera, with 12 against;

2 for handling on floor, 1 scrum offence, 1 retaliation, 1 in from side and 7 offside.
