Kenfig Hill 10 – 32 Ystalyfera

Despite the deluge of water from storm “Callum”, there was a full set of fixtures played in Division One West Central last Saturday, Ystalyfera being away at top of the league Kenfig Hill. Conditions were wet and slippery in some places underfoot, but no rain fell, a cold wind blowing across the length of the field from the Clubhouse end.

Ystalyfera kicked off into this wind, and the forwards worked off the first line out to win the put in at the first scrum. Following a drive, a penalty was awarded in the 5th minute which Steffan Castle converted: score 0 – 3. Following the re-start, ‘Fera outside half Gareth James cleared to the half way line. The “Mulers” quickly moved the ball out and with a good line kick set up a ‘Fera throw in their 22. Kenfig won a scrum and attempted to pass the ball out the line again, only to knock it on. Gaining a penalty, A neat dropped goal was put over by the Kenfig outside half in the 12th minute levelling the score: 3 – 3. Ystalyfera were attempting to open up the game but were giving away a number of penalties, which the home side were not using to their advantage. The Ystalyfera forwards thus began to retain possession and roll the attack forward themselves, and the home side had some difficulty. The result was a number of scrums being awarded for both sides. In the 23rd minute, Ystalyfera run a penalty from the half way line, the backs looking for chances but Kenfig managed to clear the ball away. Despite playing against the wind the Ystalyfera pack were playing very well, keeping their side most of the possession. In the 32nd minute centre Martyn Davies finally broke thru and slick passing saw wing Luc Caines cross over in the corner. Steffan Castle was unlucky with his kick,: score 3 – 8. The first half ended with play contested amongst the forwards.

The second period belonged to Ystalyfera. With the wind at their backs, helped by the astute line kicking of Gareth James, the game was largely in the home 22. Attempts by the Kenfig Hill defence to relieve the pressure, was sporadic at best. An impressive break by the home backs in the 74th minute saw wing Jamie Williams score a converted Try, but all the remaining play was a constant tsunami of power play by the Ystalyfera side, evident in every phase of the game. A penalty Try was awarded in the 57th minute following a driving scrum, and further Trys were scored by Bowdy Davies for the bonus point, and super-sub Ryan Lee James. Steffan Castle did his bit and he amassed 10 further points to his chase for the quickest 100 record, currently at 64 in 7 games. ( record is John Hicks 112, Gareth James 111 and 110 – these in 10 games).

Kenfig Hill were the first to admit they were overwhelmed by the strength and determination of the Ystalyfera side, the bonus point victory being well deserved.
