Trebanos 18 - 9 Ystalyfera

Trebanos 18 – 9  Ystalyfera.

At Trebanos in warm bright conditions, Ystalyfera began with the sun in their eyes, facing the Swansea end. The game started cautiously, both teams wary of each other. A tight contest to gain control of the ball in midfield developed into a set of penalties for both sides. In the 12th minute the Trebanos outside half Chris Jones opened the scoring with a well taken penalty awarded for hands in the ruck : 3 – 0. Ystalyfera were motivated into the attack and pressure in the home 22 earned a five metre lineout, well defended by Trebanos. The pressure continued and a Trebanos centre was SinBinned by the referee in the 17th minute for a dangerous tackle.  Now in the ascendancy Ystalyfera were awarded a penalty in the 25th minute for hands in the scrum, which outside half Gareth James converted : 3 – 3. Events now reverted back into a midfield tussle, only for Trebanos to break out and drop the ball. A further attack by Trebanos saw Gareth James resort to a high tackle and he in turn was yellow carded. The resulting penalty was converted again by Chris Jones in the 38th minute. The first half ended at 6 – 3.

Ystalyfera re-started aggressively with a drive by the forwards getting a penalty in the 42nd minute. This was converted by full back Steffan Castle : 6 – 6. Having to make changes in the heady contest up front, two brothers, Daniel Williams for Trebanos and Jonathan Williams for Ystalyfera, now faced up at hooker. A further penalty attempt by Steffan Castle from the half-way line just missed and the home side were beginning to give away a lot of ball. Gareth James, now back of the field converted his second penalty in the 52nd minute : 6 – 9. The contest continued unabated and a 5 metre lineout by Trebanos was well cleared by Ystalyfera. A break by the home backs then took play into the ‘Fera 22 where a drive by the ‘banos forwards got the first Try by Ben Williams in the 62nd minute. This was converted by Chris Jones : 13 – 9. Both sides now opened up and a loose attack by Ystalyfera allowed Trebanos to steal the ball, running in their second Try by Chris Griffiths in the 67th minute. This was not converted : 18 – 9. The Ystalyfera players continued to seek recompense but both teams were now feeling the warm conditions and no further scores took place.   Final score was : 18 – 9 to Trebanos.

A hard game between two well matched sides, both showing their capability to do well this season.
